I am a civilian worker in the United States Coast Guard. While I don't have to adhere to the same physical fitness standards as my uniform colleagues I do feel a certain responsibility to maintain some sort of fitness program. Recently the Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Allen, issued a statement urging us to live up to the Guardian Ethos. He challenged us to continue to dedicate our lives to helping others and doing the right thing. I accept his challenge and tried to use that as motivation in my run today. Interestingly enough, the Coast Guard has now secured two billets in Basic Underwater Demolition School, or BUDs, so that Coasties may work toward becoming qualified as Navy SEALs. I am not eligible to compete for a position, but I sure would like to get to that level of fitness. Perhaps today is the first day on the journey to becoming more of a Guardian. Activity
